Santorini Arts and Crafts
Discovering the Creative Side of Santorini
Most visitors come to Santorini for the breathtaking views and famous sunsets. But the island also has a rich artistic side. Santorini arts and crafts have shaped local life for thousands of years, with traditions going back more than 5,000 years.
If you stay longer than the usual three days, exploring Santorini arts and crafts is one of the best ways to experience the island beyond the crowded viewpoints. From prehistoric frescoes and handmade jewellery to pottery workshops and traditional weaving, Santorini offers many authentic experiences for creative travellers and art lovers.
Visit the Ancient Art of Akrotiri
One of the best places to discover the roots of Santorini arts and crafts is the archaeological site of Akrotiri. Thousands of years ago, a sophisticated civilisation lived here. Today, visitors can admire beautiful wall paintings filled with elegant clothing, hairstyles, jewellery, and decorative details that still inspire local artists.
The frescoes show how important art and craftsmanship were in ancient Santorini. You’ll notice detailed textiles, gold jewellery, cosmetics, and ceremonial objects that connect modern Santorini arts and crafts with the island’s prehistoric past.
You can easily reach Akrotiri by bus from our village, Karterados. Buses usually run once every hour, and the stop is right outside the archaeological site. Thanks to the large bioclimatic roof covering the excavations, visiting Akrotiri is comfortable throughout the year.
If you enjoy history and ancient art, combine your visit with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira. The museum displays many original frescoes and artefacts discovered in Akrotiri.
Explore Local Artists in Megalochori
On your way back from Akrotiri, stop in the traditional village of Megalochori. This peaceful village is one of the best places to explore Santorini arts and crafts and meet local artists.
If you loved the jewellery shown in the Akrotiri frescoes, visit Spanou Jewelry. Local artist and silversmith Konstantina creates elegant handmade jewellery inspired by ancient Santorini designs. Her work combines prehistoric inspiration with modern craftsmanship.
Another great stop is Symposion Cultural Center, a creative space dedicated to mythology, music, and traditional crafts. Local musician and instrument maker Giannis Pantazis takes visitors on an interactive journey through Greek mythology and ancient music traditions.
During the presentation, you’ll discover rare handmade instruments and hear stories from Greek mythology. If you book in advance, you can also join an instrument-making workshop. Symposion often hosts live music evenings with artists from all around Greece, so ask our reception team about upcoming events.
Discover Santorini’s Traditional Weaving
Santorini is not as famous for weaving as some other Greek islands, but textile crafts were once an important part of daily island life. Women used traditional wooden looms to make blankets, rugs, curtains, and household textiles for their homes.
If you are interested in local traditions, visit the Lignos Folklore Museum near Fira. The museum recreates traditional Santorini homes and displays old crafts, embroidery, household tools, and objects from everyday island life.
You can also look for the small community weaving workshop in Oia, where traditional weaving techniques still survive today.
Handmade Crafts and Artisan Workshops in Oia
Oia is famous for its caldera views and whitewashed houses, but it is also home to talented artisans and creative workshops. Walking through the narrow streets is one of the best ways to discover authentic Santorini arts and crafts away from the busy sunset crowds.
One lovely stop is Iota’s leather workshop, where she creates handmade purses and handbags using traditional leatherworking techniques. Her workshop is perfect if you are looking for a unique handmade gift from Santorini.
Art lovers should also look for the local Byzantine icon painter in Oia. He still paints icons using traditional egg tempera techniques on old wood panels. You can also see some of his work displayed in local churches.
Take a Pottery Class in Santorini
Pottery is one of the most popular forms of Santorini arts and crafts. The island’s volcanic landscape has influenced local ceramic traditions for centuries, and today visitors can experience this creative side of Santorini through pottery classes and workshops.
Near Megalochori, you’ll find several excellent pottery studios, including Earth and Water, Egli’s Pottery Studio, and 1260 Ceramic Studio. Here you can buy beautiful handmade ceramics or create your own pottery piece to take home as a unique souvenir.
Joining a pottery workshop is a fun and relaxing way to connect with local creativity. Ask our reception team to help you book a class during your stay.
Find Unique Handmade Souvenirs in Kamari
Kamari Beach has many souvenir shops, but if you want something truly original, visit Star Santorini. This creative gift shop features colourful hand-printed artwork by Christoforos Karamolegos on shirts, mugs, bags, and other objects inspired by island life.
It’s a great place to find artistic souvenirs and gifts that will remind you of Santorini long after your trip ends.
Kamari is easy to reach from our village by bus, with buses running approximately every 30 minutes.
Experience Santorini Beyond the Sunsets
Exploring Santorini arts and crafts gives visitors a deeper connection to the island’s culture, history, and everyday life. Beyond the sunsets and caldera views, Santorini is full of artists, musicians, ceramicists, jewellers, weavers, and craftspeople who keep local traditions alive.
If you want to explore even more Santorini arts and crafts, keep an eye out for small art galleries, winery exhibitions, photography shows, and seasonal artisan markets during the summer months.
