The Best Santorini Sunset Locations for Autumn
The best sunset season is here!
September and October—yes, you heard that right! Santorini is undoubtedly famous for its world-renowned sunsets. However, after the hot summer months, when a few scattered clouds begin to appear in the sky, the evenings become a true visual feast.
So, what are our favourite Santorini sunset locations, and how can you get to them?
High Up in the Sky: Pyrgos
Pyrgos village is famous for its magnificent views across the entire island. As you climb to the top of the village, passing through the ruins of the old castle walls, known locally as the kasteli, a spectacular panorama gradually unfolds in front of you.
From here, you can see the croissant-shaped island of Santorini, as well as the four other islands scattered across the sea. The sun sets behind them, creating one of the most impressive views on the island. For this reason, Pyrgos is one of our favourite Santorini sunset locations.
You can watch the sunset from the open plateau at the top of the village or book yourself a seat at Franco’s Café. Here, you can enjoy the sunset accompanied by classical music at one of the island’s oldest and best-known sunset spots.
You can reach Pyrgos by taking a bus in the direction of Perissa. Alternatively, you can arrive by car or ATV and park in one of the numerous parking areas at the entrance to the village.
Just You and the Sea: Megalochori
Are you looking for a more secluded sunset spot? There are quite a few—you simply need to know where to find them!
Our number-one recommendation is the caldera side of Megalochori village. It is easiest to reach with a rental car or ATV. Search for “The Heart of Santorini” on Google Maps, and the directions will take you to a small parking area.
However, instead of following the crowds towards the Heart of Santorini, take the path along the caldera rim towards Venetsanos Winery. The path passes a few scattered villas, and there is a good chance that you will find yourself almost completely alone.
Our favourite place along the way is the little white chapel. Nevertheless, the entire path is picture-perfect, making Megalochori one of the quieter Santorini sunset locations.
A Prime Location: Ammoudi Bay
Santorini became famous partly because of the beautiful golden light reflecting on the little white houses of Oia. One of the most magnificent places to experience this is Ammoudi Bay, the tiny port located directly below the village.
Here, you can sit at one of the waterfront tavernas and watch the sun disappear into the sea. Meanwhile, when you look up, you will see the famous houses of Oia perched dramatically on the red cliffs above you.
You can take a bus to Oia and then walk down the many steps leading to the port. Alternatively, there is a complimentary shuttle between Ammoudi Bay and the small parking area above it, where you can also leave your rental vehicle.
Our tip is to spend some time exploring Oia before heading down to Ammoudi for dinner. Reserving a table is highly recommended, and keep in mind that the front-row tables usually come with a minimum-spend requirement.
On the Caldera Rim: Firostefani
If you would prefer to watch the sunset directly from the caldera rim, we suggest Firostefani. This picturesque village is located between Fira and Imerovigli and is approximately a 10–15-minute walk from the centre of either village.
Compared with Oia, Firostefani has fewer crowds while still offering fantastic views. It is also one of the most easily accessible Santorini sunset locations from Caveland.
For a fun evening experience, book a table at Volkan on the Rocks for sunset, followed by an outdoor screening of Mamma Mia! after dark. You will watch the film wearing headphones, and there may even be a little dancing at the end!
Fira is approximately a 20-minute walk from Caveland, followed by another 15-minute uphill walk to the café. Volkan also serves delicious meze—small Greek dishes that are perfect for sharing.
Sunset from the Beach: Vlychada
Although Santorini’s best-known beaches are located on the eastern side of the island, facing the sunrise, during autumn you can also see the sun setting into the sea from Vlychada Beach.
This island secret is famous for its spectacular volcanic sand formations and its long stretch of unorganised beach. It is also very popular with locals, especially if they are looking for somewhere peaceful and away from the crowds.
Vlychada is easiest to reach with a rental car or ATV. Bring something to sit on, arrive a little early and enjoy the wild landscape as the evening light begins to change.
From a Catamaran
