October in Santorini Is for Magic Sunsets
Or so we believe here at Caveland. The stray autumn clouds make the sunsets extra special. Santorini and sunset are two words that go hand in hand. Thanks to the classic Summer Lovers movie, the sunset from Oia became popular even before the island turned into a magnet for the crowds.
But there are many more amazing Santorini sunset locations, and autumn is the time of year when they feel more magical than ever. If you’re keen on public transportation and walking, or if you’re up for a bit more fun from the back of a rented quad bike or car, we suggest heading to some of these lesser-known spots on the island.
Faros
The southernmost tip of the island is well known for its sunset views. The Greek word “faros” means “lighthouse,” and that’s exactly what you’ll find here. Perched on the rocks is a beautiful white structure with a dark roof, gazing out over the sea and one of the most stunning Santorini sunsets you can imagine. The sun dips into the water, the crowds are few, and the colors are breathtaking.
The Heart of Santorini
With a bit of help from Google Maps, you’ll find this hidden spot just outside the village of Megalochori. Leave your vehicle at a small cliffside parking area and follow the steep path downhill to discover a heart-shaped hole carved into the pumice walls. Nearby is a small whitewashed chapel — if you’re lucky, it might be open so you can light a candle inside. The Santorini sunset here falls behind the volcanic islands of Nea and Palea Kameni, creating a perfect silhouette.
Pyrgos Village
Some say Pyrgos offers the most beautiful sunset on the island. The village, whose name means “tower” in Greek, sits at the highest point in Santorini. From here, you’ll have panoramic views of the volcano, the sea, and the crescent-shaped island. Watch the Santorini sunset unfold from a rooftop terrace, or with a drink in hand at Franco’s Café, which is famous for its classical music played during sunset hour.
Firostefani
If you’re after a more typical sunset experience — with a drink or meal — head to Firostefani. It’s just a short walk from Fira and doesn’t attract cruise ship crowds, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the iconic whitewashed houses, blue-domed chapels, and charming cafés. For sunset drinks, stop by Café Galini. Or go for a full dinner with a view at Aktaion as the Santorini sunset lights up the sky.
Skaros Rock
If you’re a fan of walking, Skaros Rock might be your ideal sunset location. This iconic rock formation once hosted a fortified settlement, and now stands as a dramatic lookout point in front of Imerovigli. You can walk to a hidden chapel facing the sunset — or if you’re feeling adventurous, climb all the way to the top for an unbeatable view of the final Santorini sunset of your day.
✨ October Sunsets Are Pure Magic
The days are still warm, the crowds have thinned, and every Santorini sunset feels like it’s meant just for you. Whether you’re a photographer, a romantic, or simply someone in search of quiet beauty, October sunsets in Santorini leave a lasting impression — the kind that stays with you long after your trip ends.
