5 Hikes You Should Include in Your April Trip: The Best Ways to Hike in Santorini
Spring is here, and there isn’t a better time to go for a hike in Santorini. While the island is famous for its blue domes and whitewashed houses, it also offers a wild, geological side filled with breathtaking rock formations in a variety of colors and shapes.
During summer, hiking can feel overwhelming due to the heat. However, in spring, the temperatures stay mild and pleasant. That’s exactly why April is perfect—just pack your backpack, wear comfortable shoes, and head out to explore.
1. Oia to Fira (or the Other Way Around)
To begin with, this is the most iconic hike in Santorini—and for good reason.
The trail from Oia to Fira takes around 3 hours. Along the way, you follow the caldera and enjoy some of the best views on the island. Even better, most of the route stays relatively flat, so beginners can comfortably complete it.
As you walk:
- First, stop at the peaceful church of Profitis Ilias and take a short break
- Then, grab a freshly squeezed orange juice and homemade walnut pie from a small roadside stand halfway through
- After that, continue through Imerovigli and Firostefani for even more stunning views
2. Two Beach Towns in One Day
If you’re looking for something more adventurous, this hike in Santorini connects Kamari and Perissa.
First, you climb a steep path for about 45 minutes. At the top, you’ll reach Ancient Thera. If you enjoy history, spend around 2 hours exploring the site.
Afterwards, head down toward Perissa. There, you can relax by the sea or grab something to eat. Finally, return by local bus or, during warmer days, take a sea taxi between the two beaches.
3. Pyrgos and Above
Next, head to Pyrgos, the highest village on the island.
From here, you can follow a clearly marked path up to Profitis Ilias, the highest peak in Santorini. The full hike takes about 2.5 hours, including time to explore the monastery at the top.
Alternatively, if you prefer something shorter, choose the easier route to a hidden chapel “katafigio”. In the past, locals used this spot as a refuge from pirate raids. Today, it offers peace, quiet, and beautiful views—all within a 30-minute walk.
4. Megalochori & the Heart of Santorini
For a quieter experience, explore the caldera near Megalochori.
Here, a steep downhill path leads you toward a small chapel with a direct view of the volcano. Just before reaching it, you’ll pass the famous “Heart of Santorini,” a natural rock formation shaped like a heart.
Most visitors stop here briefly and continue to the next destination. However, if you continue walking along the caldera, you’ll discover a much more peaceful side of the island, surrounded by villas and open landscapes.
5. Gorge of Vothonas
Finally, if you want something truly off the beaten path, visit the gorge near Vothonas.
At first, the area looks simple. However, within 15 minutes, you’ll reach a hidden chapel carved directly into the rock. Since the path is not easy to find, it’s best to go with someone who knows the area.
Although the chapel opens only once a year (in early February), the surrounding landscape makes the visit worthwhile. In fact, the tall rock formations and quiet atmosphere create the perfect setting for meditation and reflection. Check out the half day private retreats with our owner Veronika.

Overall, choosing a hike in Santorini allows you to experience the island beyond the usual spots. Not only do you avoid the crowds, but you also connect with its raw and natural beauty.
So, if you’re visiting in April, don’t just look at Santorini—walk it.
